Greece Faces Devastating Wildfires Amid Extreme Weather

Greece is currently battling severe wildfires that have devastated large areas of forest and agricultural land. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis stated that the country is experiencing "extreme weather conditions," with winds reaching 100 kilometers per hour, complicating firefighting efforts.

Nearly 500 firefighters are engaged in combating the fires around Porto Germeno, located 70 kilometers northwest of Athens, while another 100 are addressing a separate blaze in Aigialia. A new fire ignited on the Ionian Sea island of Cephalonia, where a 44-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of arson.

The National Observatory's climate tracker reported that over 6,500 hectares have been burned in various fires, with adverse meteorological conditions persisting. Evacuations have occurred in Porto Germeno and nearby villages, with significant damage to homes.

Nikos Georgopoulos from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki noted the rapid spread of the fire, while local farmer Minas Tsotdanis reported the destruction of multiple houses.
