Spokane Wildfires Destroy Homes, Prompt Evacuations

Early Monday, firefighters in Spokane, Washington, battled multiple wildfires that have devastated hundreds of structures, leading to mass evacuations over the weekend. The National Weather Service warned of "extremely critical fire weather conditions" due to strong winds and exceptional dryness.

Spokane resident Geoff Beadles described the destruction as heartbreaking after evacuating with his family. Mayor Lisa Brown confirmed that hundreds of homes have been lost and expressed concern for potential casualties.

As of Sunday, the fires were zero percent contained, with worsening air quality expected. Washington Governor Bob Ferguson declared a state of emergency, citing a fourth consecutive year of drought exacerbated by climate change.

He has reached out to federal officials for disaster response resources. Fire officials reported that unauthorized drone activity was hindering firefighting efforts, and David Upthegrove from the Department of Natural Resources noted that Spokane's fire is one of 15 major fires currently burning in Washington.
