Nwabali Returns to Football After Personal Tragedy

Stanlei Nwabali, a goalkeeper for Chippa United and the Super Eagles, faced significant personal tragedy with the loss of his mother, Grace, and father, Chief Godspow Nwabali, within a week in late 2024. Additionally, he lost his grandmother shortly thereafter.

These events led to a difficult period for Nwabali, affecting his performance during the Nigeria 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and World Cup qualifiers, where he exhibited unusual aggression on the field. His agent, Moham Lawal, revealed that the emotional toll of these tragedies prompted Nwabali to consider quitting football altogether.

However, he ultimately decided to take a break and requested a mutual release from Chippa United in February 2025. Nwabali turned down transfer offers from clubs in Saudi Arabia, England, and elsewhere in Africa to focus on recovery.

He has now returned to Chippa United for the 2026/27 season, where he is expected to resume regular competitive football after missing Nigeria's last four matches.
