Group Demands INEC Chairman Amupitan's Resignation

A coalition of prominent Nigerians has urged Amupitan, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to resign due to allegations of partisanship that they claim undermine the credibility of the electoral body ahead of the 2027 general elections. The group, which includes notable figures such as Usman Bugaji, Femi Falana, Obi Ezekwesili, Ayuba Wabba, Pat Utomi, Bilikisu Magoro, and Nkoyo Toyo, issued a statement through their media coordinator, Jame Ezema.

They expressed concerns over recent developments, including alleged digital footprints linking Amupitan to the ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC). The group emphasized that Amupitan's denial of these allegations is insufficient and warned against attempts to silence critics.

They highlighted the risks of eroding public trust and the potential for Nigeria to become a de facto one-party state. The coalition called for an independent investigation and an impartial panel to address these serious ethical questions surrounding the INEC Chairman's neutrality.
