Bauchi Group Demands Senate Seat Declaration Vacant

A political group in Bauchi State, led by Aminu Garba, has submitted a petition to the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, demanding the declaration of the Bauchi South Senate seat as vacant. This request follows the defection of Senator Shehu Buba Umar from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the People's Redemption Party (PRP).

The group argues that Umar's defection violates Section 68(1)(g) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1999, amended), which they claim warrants the declaration of the seat as vacant. They maintain that Umar voluntarily abandoned the APC platform, which was the basis for his election.

The group has urged Akpabio to act on the petition within 14 days, warning that failure to do so will lead them to pursue legal action to ensure constitutional compliance. The petition was submitted on July 2, 2026, and the group emphasizes their commitment to uphold democratic principles.
