Group Groan As Govt Shut Down Forest, Multiple Taxation By Agencies

Members of the Bayelsa Timber Dealers Association are protesting the government's closure of forests in eight local government areas since January 2025, affecting their businesses for eight months. The association, which has a long history predating the creation of Bayelsa State, emphasized the negative impact on the 85 Bayelsans who rely on the timber trade for survival.

They criticized the government for not providing a justifiable reason or prior notification for the forest closures. The association contributes 80% of the state's Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) and provides employment opportunities for the youth.

They have appealed to the government to consider their plight, especially in the current harsh economic conditions. The association also raised concerns about multiple taxation by various revenue collection agencies, urging the government to address these issues.

Despite efforts to engage government officials, including the Deputy Governor, their concerns remain unresolved.
