Legal Group Questions Fairness in Diezani's UK Trial

The League of Legal Practitioners of Nigeria (LOLPPON) held a press conference in Abuja to express serious concerns about the ongoing trial of former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, in the United Kingdom. The organization highlighted inconsistencies in the evidence and procedural gaps that could jeopardize the fairness of the trial.

Priscilla Makoshi, the national secretary of LOLPPON, emphasized that their intervention is based on strict legal principles rather than political considerations, insisting that Alison-Madueke remains innocent until proven guilty. The group conducted a detailed legal review of the UK court proceedings and identified significant concerns regarding the prosecution's case, including issues with the chain of custody of documents and the reliability of testimonies.

They argued that the prosecution's evidence is weakened by the absence of critical materials and inconsistencies in the ownership of luxury properties linked to the case. LOLPPON also noted that Alison-Madueke has faced substantial restrictions in the UK since her arrest in October 2015, raising questions about international fair hearing standards.
