Urgent Action Needed on Insecurity in South West Nigeria

The Southwest Youth Forum, led by Olumid Fasubaa, has expressed serious concerns regarding the escalating insecurity in the South West region of Nigeria. In a statement issued in Ado Ekiti, the forum highlighted a significant rise in incidents of banditry, kidnapping for ransom, and clashes between farmers and herders, which have begun to directly threaten the livelihoods and safety of communities across states including Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Ondo, Ekiti, and Lagos.

Fasubaa warned that the region, once regarded as a hub of economic stability, is at risk of broader destabilization if urgent coordinated action is not taken by state authorities. The forum commended the Southwest Governors' Forum for previous initiatives, including the proposal for a regional security trust fund and improved intelligence sharing.

However, they stressed the need for concrete actions to address the persistent attacks. The group called for the strengthening of state-backed security structures, community policing, and enhanced inter-state collaboration for intelligence sharing and rapid response to security threats.
