Guinea-Bissau Opposition Leader Released for Medical Care

Pereira, an opposition leader in Guinea-Bissau, was arrested for the second time earlier this month on charges of financing and providing logistical support for an alleged coup attempt in October. He was among several senior politicians detained after a military takeover in November 2025, which ousted President Umaro Sissoco Embaló shortly after presidential and legislative elections.

The junta justified its actions by claiming it was necessary to prevent violence between rival political supporters and subsequently announced a one-year transitional administration. Pereira's release for medical treatment comes shortly after the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) urged the military-led government to unconditionally release all detained political figures, asserting that this would strengthen the credibility of the transition process.

The court indicated that Pereira's legal status would be reviewed after his 90-day medical leave expires.
