Guinea-Bissau Launches ECOWAS Health Policy in Gabú, Oio

Guinea-Bissau has transitioned from discussions to the implementation phase of the ECOWAS Regional Community Health Policy, selecting Gabú and Oio as pilot regions. This decision was made during a three-day National Engagement Workshop held in Bissau from August 19 to 21, 2026, organized by the West African Health Organisation (WAHO) in collaboration with Guinea-Bissau’s Ministry of Public Health.

The workshop involved around 60 representatives from various sectors, emphasizing the importance of national ownership, multisectoral coordination, and community participation for successful policy implementation. Dr Melchior Athanase Joël C.

Aïssi, the Director-General of WAHO, noted the significance of this initiative in moving from planning to action. Commodore Dr Quinhin Nantote, the Minister of Public Health, highlighted the need to reach vulnerable populations, particularly in remote areas, and acknowledged Community Health Workers as vital links between health facilities and communities.

The workshop also addressed priority interventions, stakeholder responsibilities, and the establishment of a national coordination mechanism.
