Guinea-Bissau Military Junta Appoints Gen. Horta N’Tam as Transitional President After Swift Coup

Guinea-Bissau's military junta has appointed Major General Horta N’Tam as the transitional president following a coup that ousted President Umaro Sissoco Embal. The junta, calling itself the High Military Command, aims to restore order and lead the country through a one-year transition period.

The military seized total control of the country, suspended the electoral process, shut borders, and arrested top government and military officials. The African Union has condemned the coup and called for the immediate and unconditional release of Embal.

The coup is seen as necessary to prevent narcotrafficking and ensure the capture of Guinea's democracy.
