Hantavirus Outbreak Linked to MV Hondiu Cruise Ship

The MV Hondiu, which recently docked off the coast of Tenerife in Spain's Canary Islands, is at the center of a hantavirus outbreak that has resulted in six confirmed infections, including two fatalities. The World Health Organization reported that four individuals are hospitalized.

Following the outbreak, passengers were transferred to smaller boats and taken to Granadilla port. A repatriation flight was organized for American passengers, with 17 individuals set to be quarantined at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a health alert advising doctors to monitor potential hantavirus cases in six states: New Jersey, Arizona, California, Georgia, Texas, and Virginia.

The CDC classified the outbreak as a Level 3 emergency response. Experts, including Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and Maria Van Kerkhove, urged the public not to panic, emphasizing that hantavirus is not spread like COVID-19.
