Hantavirus Outbreak: Three Deaths Confirmed on Cruise Ship

The World Health Organization confirmed a total of eight Hantavirus cases, including three deaths, as of May 8, 2026. The outbreak is associated with the MV Hondiu cruise ship, which had passengers traveling from Ushuaia, Argentina, to Cape Verde.

Six cases have been confirmed, with four patients hospitalized. Epidemiological investigations are underway to determine the source of exposure, including travel history and potential exposure points.

The first case was reported between April 6 and April 28, 2026, characterized by fever and gastrointestinal symptoms, rapidly progressing to pneumonia and acute respiratory distress syndrome. The UK Health Security Agency is managing 24 individuals from the cruise ship who will be isolated in hospitals.

The ship had 147 people on board, including passengers from 23 nations. The U.S.

State Department is coordinating repatriation efforts for American passengers, while health authorities continue to monitor the situation and provide guidance on infection prevention measures.
