Bishop Kawas Denies Financial Gain from Obi Support

Archbishop Leonard Bature Kawas, a leader of the Charismatic Bishops, asserted that his support for Peter Obi's 2023 presidential bid was not financially motivated. During an appearance on Arise TV’s Prime Time programme, Kawas responded to criticisms regarding his political involvement and the endorsement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term by the Charismatic Bishops.

He stated, “I supported Peter Obi at the initial stage of his presidential ambition and went with him everywhere in Nigeria, and he never gave me one dollar, one naira.” Kawas explained that Obi did not inquire about his travel arrangements or accommodations, and he personally financed the transportation of six clergymen who accompanied him. He also addressed accusations of being a fake bishop due to his political activities, recalling his previous support for former Presidents Goodluck Jonathan and Olusegun Obasanjo.

Kawas questioned why his political engagement was now being used to challenge his identity as a bishop.
