Safety Concerns Rise in Nigeria's Electricity Sector

In March 2026, a high-tension cable fell onto lower-voltage lines in Manchok, Kaura Local Government Area of Kaduna State, leading to the deaths of three individuals, including a toddler and a 10-year-old, while three others were injured. This incident followed another in August 2025, where a high-tension power line snapped and struck a point-of-sale operator in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State.

Additionally, in Kabusa, Abuja, a young boy named Samuel Ayodele was killed by a live wire. The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) reported 24 accidents in Q1 2026, resulting in 17 fatalities and 13 injuries, a decline from 46 accidents, 26 fatalities, and 17 injuries in Q4 2025.

These incidents underscore the urgent need for improved infrastructure maintenance, public safety awareness, and stronger regulatory enforcement within Nigeria's electricity supply network, as the risks associated with high-voltage installations can lead to severe injuries and fatalities.
