NHIA's Dr Kelechi Ohiri Calls for Effective Health Reforms

Dr Kelechi Ohiri, the Director-General of the National Health Insurance Authority, stated that health innovations must lead to measurable improvements in the lives of Nigerians, emphasizing that policies and technology alone cannot resolve healthcare challenges without effective implementation. Speaking at the 2026 Future of Health Conference organized by Nigeria Health Watch in Abuja, Ohiri noted that approximately 19,000 women benefited from the NHIA's emergency obstetric care program over the past 18 months, with around 300 accredited hospitals providing treatment.
This program allows women facing childbirth complications to receive care without upfront payments, financed by the NHIA. Ohiri also mentioned that about 6,000 women received treatment for obstetric fistula through partnerships.
He stressed the importance of domestic ownership of health priorities and sustainable financing mechanisms, outlining the Nigerian Health Sector Reform Investment Initiative's focus on governance, service delivery, health financing, and health security to address Nigeria's healthcare challenges.
