Heavy Gunfire in Niger's Capital Disrupts National TV

On Saturday, heavy gunfire was reported in Niger's capital, Niamey, particularly around Base 101 and the airport, prompting the national television station Tele Sahel to go off air. The military junta, which has ruled Niger for three years, has faced ongoing jihadist violence.

The origins of the shooting were unclear, but the military urged calm and advised against sharing unverified information. Witnesses described heavy gunfire and explosions starting around 1:00 am local time, with sporadic shooting continuing into the morning.

Soldiers blocked access to key areas, including the presidential palace. Niamey airport has been a target for jihadist groups, including the Islamic State in the Sahel and the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims, which have attacked the area multiple times this year.

General Abdourahamane Tiani, head of the military regime following a coup in July 2023, previously acknowledged vulnerabilities in the defense system that allowed these attacks.
