Calm Restored in Niger After Failed Military Mutiny

Calm has returned to Niamey, Niger's capital, after a failed mutiny that occurred in the early hours of Saturday, resulting in intense fighting. Dozens of soldiers were detained, and several others were killed while attempting to storm the presidential palace.

This incident marks the third instance of fighting in the capital this year, with previous incidents involving jihadist attacks on a key military base at the airport. Residents reported the troops' dissatisfaction with the government's inability to address militant activities.

General Abdourahmane Tiani, who has been in power since a coup three years ago, pledged to enhance security but has struggled against attacks from groups linked to the Islamic State and Al-Qaeda. Tiani has severed ties with France, Niger's former colonial power, and is seeking support from countries such as Iran, Turkey, and Russia.

Reports indicate that Russia's paramilitary Africa Corps played a role in repelling the mutiny on Saturday.
