UNESCO and POWA Partner to Boost Nigerian Education Abroad

On Wednesday, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed in Abuja between UNESCO, represented by Abdulsalami Ladigbolu Oranmiyan, and the Police Wives Association (POWA), led by Elizabeth Egbetokun. This partnership aims to support Nigerian students seeking higher education abroad, providing access to over 250 universities globally.

The initiative is designed to complement existing student funding schemes, particularly the NELFUND, which primarily supports students studying within Nigeria. The program will begin with a pilot phase targeting police secondary school students, ensuring that financial barriers do not hinder their admission to foreign institutions.

Egbetokun emphasized that the initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu's educational priorities and aims to expand access to higher education for underserved communities. The program will promote transparency and accountability while encouraging collaboration among government agencies, the private sector, and civil society to improve educational access for Nigerian youth.
