UNESCO and POWA Launch Initiative for Nigerian Students

UNESCO and the Police Officers Wives Association (POWA) have signed a memorandum of understanding in Abuja on Thursday to assist Nigerians seeking higher education abroad. This partnership aims to alleviate financial burdens for students, particularly those from police secondary schools, by providing access to a global university application portal.

The program will initially support 40 selected students and is designed to complement existing funding schemes like the NELFUND, which primarily supports domestic education. The initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu's educational agenda, focusing on improving access to learning for all Nigerian youth.

The pilot phase will commence in September and aims to ensure that no child is excluded from global educational opportunities. Elizabeth Egbetokun, President of POWA, emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability in the initiative, calling for support from government agencies and the private sector to enhance educational access in underserved communities.
