Hisbah Denies Restrictions on Christian Worship in Sokoto

On August 29, the Sokoto State Hisbah Board, led by Commander Dr. Usman Abdullahi Jatau, dismissed allegations circulating on social media that it was imposing restrictions on Christian worship and practices in Sokoto State. These claims, attributed to blogger @radical.okoja.bia, suggested that the Hisbah had prohibited mixed gatherings in churches and mandated separate church services.

In a statement, Jatau described these allegations as false, misleading, and malicious, aimed at discrediting the Board and undermining religious harmony. He clarified that the Hisbah's mandate, established by the Sokoto State House of Assembly, applies solely to Muslims and does not regulate or interfere with the practices of Christians or adherents of other faiths.

Other unfounded claims included restrictions on pastors sitting beside their wives during services and an alleged agenda to Islamize Nigeria, which Jatau categorically rejected.
