Shettima Calls for Accountability in Food Security Efforts

Vice President Kashim Shettima demanded increased accountability for the Federal Government’s food security interventions, emphasizing that public resources should yield tangible benefits for farmers, markets, and households. This statement followed the seventh meeting of the Presidential Food Systems Coordinating Unit (PFSCU) at the State House in Abuja.

The meeting included governors, federal ministers, private sector representatives, and development partners to assess Nigeria’s food systems and coordinate actions for domestic production and food availability. Shettima urged for stronger visibility and accountability in ongoing interventions, advocating for enhanced domestic food production and affordability.

The committee discussed measures to support farmers, improve food movement, and strengthen strategic reserves, particularly as the main harvest period approaches. Marion Moon, the PFSCU Executive Secretary, stated that the government would rely on evidence to guide interventions.

Jigawa State Governor Umar Namadi stressed the importance of placing farmers at the center of agricultural policies, while the Minister of Finance highlighted aligning domestic production with trade policy.
