Power Minister Pledges Reform Amid Grid Collapse Crisis

Olasunkanmi Tegb, confirmed as Nigeria's Minister of Power, addressed the Senate on Wednesday, stating he would be held accountable if the national grid continues to collapse. He emphasized the need for urgent reforms to stabilize the country's troubled power sector, which has been plagued by recurrent grid failures and infrastructural vandalism.

During the Senate plenary in Abuja, Tegb acknowledged the challenges, including weak coordination and inadequate enforcement of technical standards, which contribute to the instability of the grid. He pledged a 100-day reform window aimed at stabilizing the grid and introducing a public performance dashboard to allow Nigerians to track progress.

Tegb warned that if no visible results are achieved within three months, he would be held accountable. He also admitted that the current financial model is unsustainable and promised to reflect market realities in electricity pricing.

The Senate expressed bipartisan concern over the sector's dysfunction and called for immediate action to restore investor confidence and improve electricity supply.
