Senate Confirms Olasunkanmi Tegbe as Power Minister

On a recent date, the Nigerian Senate confirmed Olasunkanmi Tegbe as the Minister of Power, following a rigorous screening process led by Senate President Godswill Akpabio. The Senate emphasized the urgent need to address Nigeria's deepening electricity crisis, particularly the persistent collapses of the national grid, which are attributed to weak transmission infrastructure and financial constraints.

Senator Moham Tahir Monguno from Borno highlighted the significant challenges facing the sector, including recurrent grid failures that hinder industrial growth. Tegbe acknowledged these systemic issues and pledged to enforce stricter operational discipline and improve management across the network.

He committed to visible improvements within his first 100 days, including stabilizing the grid and enhancing transparency through a public performance dashboard. Additionally, Tegbe recognized the financial unsustainability of the current model and promised to implement market-reflective tariffs to protect vulnerable consumers.

Senators raised concerns about the lack of access to electricity for rural dwellers, with Tegbe proposing mini-grid and renewable energy solutions to bridge the gap.
