Honest Ahanor Joins Chelsea and Palace on Same Day

On September 1, 2023, Honest Ahanor, an 18-year-old defender from Atalanta, made Premier League history by being announced by both Chelsea and Crystal Palace on the same day. Ahanor has agreed to a deal worth up to £40 million to join Chelsea next summer, but he will spend the 2026-27 season on loan at Crystal Palace.

He was unveiled by both clubs, participating in separate photoshoots while wearing their badges. Ahanor expressed his excitement about joining Palace, stating, “I’m very happy to be here and to be a part of this great family.” This arrangement is notable as Chelsea already has a player, Axel Disasi, on loan at Palace, but the loan of Ahanor is structured through Atalanta, circumventing Premier League rules that limit clubs to loaning only one player to another club in the same division.

Ahanor joined Atalanta from Genoa last summer for €16 million plus €4 million in add-ons and made 28 Serie A appearances last season.
