Honoring Seafarers on Day of the Seafarer 2026

On June 25, 2026, the global maritime community will observe the Day of the Seafarer, established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to recognize the invaluable contributions of seafarers to global commerce. The theme for 2026 emphasizes the dual burden seafarers bear: carrying the world trade while facing significant risks.

Despite their essential role, seafarers often remain invisible in the global economy, enduring harsh conditions at sea, isolation, and threats such as piracy and severe weather. The maritime transport industry is crucial, with approximately 80 percent of global trade carried by sea.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the importance of seafarers became evident as they continued to transport essential goods despite facing extraordinary hardships, including being stranded at sea and prolonged separation from families.
