Lawmakers reject opposition demands for president to step down over insecurity, saying security challenges require cross-government collaboration.

The House of Representatives has rejected calls from the Minority Caucus for President Bola Tinubu to resign over rising insecurity across Nigeria. In a statement issued Friday through spokesman Hon.

Akintunde Rotimi, the House majority argued that tackling security problems requires coordinated effort among all arms of government, not single-person accountability. The Minority Caucus, led by Minority Leader Fred Agbedi, held a press conference Wednesday demanding the president focus on national security rather than preparing for his 2027 re-election campaign.

Agbedi stated that Nigerians are facing killings, kidnappings, and economic hardship while political calculations take priority. He called for Tinubu to suspend 2027 campaign activities for six months to concentrate on security and the economy.

The House countered that insecurity is not a new problem created under the current administration but a longstanding national challenge that cannot be solved through isolation or single interventions. Rotimi's statement acknowledged the military has recorded operational successes across multiple theaters despite the difficulties.

The House also noted that the Minority Caucus, as lawmakers, bear shared responsibility in government and should partner with the executive rather than issue ultimatums. The dispute reflects deeper disagreement over how to address Nigeria's security crisis.

While the Minority Caucus frames insecurity as a defining failure of Tinubu's leadership, the House majority positions it as a complex, inherited problem requiring legislative support and sustained coordination. Both sides say security remains an urgent national priority, though they differ sharply on whether presidential resignation is the appropriate response.
