House to Review 2027 Election Date Amid Ramadan Concerns

The House of Representatives in Nigeria is set to reconvene on Tuesday for an emergency session to address the implications of the Independent National Electoral Commission's (INEC) announcement regarding the 2027 general election timetable. The session, called by House spokesperson Akin Rotimi, aims to discuss legislative matters related to the announcement, particularly its timing, which coincides with the Ramadan fasting period from February 7 to March 8, 2027.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called for INEC to reconsider the February 20, 2027, election date, emphasizing the need for maximum participation from the Muslim electorate during this significant religious observance. Bashir Ahmad, a former presidential aide, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the challenges faced by Muslim voters during Ramadan.

INEC's chairman, Moham Haruna, stated that the election timetable adheres to constitutional requirements and regulatory guidelines. The House aims to ensure that the electoral process remains inclusive and sensitive to the socio-religious realities of Nigeria.
