House of Reps to Address INEC's 2027 Election Timetable

The House of Representatives is set to convene an emergency session in response to the Independent National Electoral Commission's (INEC) announcement of the 2027 election timetable, which includes presidential elections on February 20, 2027, and governorship/state house assembly polls on March 6, 2027. Prof. Joash Amupitan, INEC Chairman, made this announcement at the commission's headquarters in Abuja.

The emergency session, as outlined in a memorandum issued by the Office of the Speaker, is crucial for addressing legislative matters connected to INEC's announcement, particularly concerning the timeline for public notice of elections. Rep. Akin Rotimi Jr., the spokesman for the House, emphasized the importance of this session for Nigeria's democratic process.

The session will also allow lawmakers to reconsider earlier decisions regarding the Electoral Amendment Bill, particularly the statutory notice period for elections, which INEC currently mandates to be 360 days. The House aims to adjust this timeline to enhance electoral flexibility, especially considering the upcoming Ramadan period.
