ADC Criticizes Akpabio Over Electoral Act Comments

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has condemned Senate President Godswill Akpabio's remarks regarding the Electoral Act 2026, which he defended during an event in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. Akpabio dismissed opposition concerns about the Act, claiming it was correctly formulated.

In response, ADC's National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, expressed outrage, stating that Akpabio's comments reveal the Act's intent to favor the ruling party led by President Bola Tinubu. The ADC criticized provisions within the law that they believe protect dishonesty and undermine opposition parties, warning that such measures could erode public confidence in Nigeria's democracy.

They anticipate that history will judge the implications of the 2026 Electoral Act harshly, particularly regarding its provisions that remove certification for forgery as a valid ground to challenge electoral results. The ADC emphasized the need for legislative amendments to avoid serious constitutional conflicts and highlighted the desperation of political parties that could potentially harm the country.
