Bird Strikes Disrupt Flight Operations in Nigeria

Bird strikes have become a critical issue for flight safety in Nigeria, with airlines experiencing significant operational disruptions and financial losses. Unit Nigeria Airline reported that two of its aircraft suffered bird strikes within 24 hours, marking the fourth incident in January 2026 alone.

Chief Operating Officer Osita Okonkwo highlighted the impact of these strikes, noting that they have led to the grounding of aircraft and the cancellation of numerous flights. The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) is actively working on strategies to mitigate bird strikes, including a study to identify prevalent bird species around Murtala Muhammed Airport, where 70% of incidents involve black kites.

FAAN plans to adopt measures similar to those at Phoenix Airport to deter birds. In 2025, Air Peace disclosed 49 bird strikes, and the financial impact of these incidents has been substantial, with losses estimated at $60 million over 21 months.

The situation remains critical as airlines continue to face challenges from bird strikes.
