Nigerian Military Faces Heavy Losses Amid Insurgent Attacks

In a troubling escalation, the Nigerian military has lost three commanding officers within a week due to insurgent attacks in Borno State, bringing the total number of commanding officers killed in the last three months to seven. The recent casualties include Major U Mairiga, Lt Col Umar Faruq, and Lt Col S Iliyasu, who were stationed at various military bases.

The attacks occurred despite intensified military operations in high-risk areas such as the Sambisa Forest and Lake Chad Basin. On March 9, insurgents overran a military camp in Kukawa, resulting in the death of Lt Col Umar Faruq and several soldiers.

The Joint Task Force Northeast Operation Hadin Kai confirmed the deaths but did not disclose the total number of casualties. Previous attacks included a significant incident on March 1, 2026, where Major Umar Ibrahim Mairiga was killed during a Boko Haram assault.

The military continues to face challenges in securing the region against persistent insurgent threats.
