Nigerian Military Loses Three Officers to Terror Attacks

In a troubling escalation, the Nigerian military lost three commanding officers to Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists within a week in Borno State. The officers, Major U Mairiga, Lt Col Umar Faruq, and Lt Col S Iliyasu, were killed during ambushes while conducting operations in high-risk areas such as Kukawa and Damasak.

The attacks occurred despite ongoing military offensives intended to diminish insurgent capabilities. The incidents included an attack on March 9, where insurgents overran a military camp in Kukawa, resulting in the deaths of Lt Col Umar Faruq and several soldiers.

Earlier, on March 1, Major Mairiga was killed during an assault on a military base in Bama. The military has reported significant insurgent casualties in recent operations, yet the frequency of attacks underscores the persistent threat posed by these groups.

The situation remains critical as military efforts continue to face challenges from insurgent forces.
