Nigerian Man Flees South Africa After Xenophobic Attacks

Okafor Ugochukwu, a Nigerian businessman from Anambra State, fled South Africa after experiencing three xenophobic attacks that devastated his business and left him homeless. Ugochukwu moved to South Africa in 2014, initially seeking better opportunities and establishing a clothing business in Johannesburg.

However, his life took a drastic turn in 2018 when xenophobic violence targeted foreign nationals, leading to the destruction of his shop and loss of all his possessions. Despite attempts to rebuild his life by selling accessories, he faced further attacks that compelled him to abandon everything, including his two daughters, who remain in South Africa.

Ugochukwu sought refuge at the Nigerian consulate in Pretoria, where he was assisted in returning to Nigeria. He expressed gratitude to the Nigerian government for facilitating his return and hopes for support to rebuild his life after suffering significant losses.
