Tinubu Urges Political Stability, Signs Electoral Act

On Wednesday, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu addressed political leaders in Abuja, reaffirming his commitment to democracy and the rule of law. He explained his decision to sign the amended Electoral Act, stating it was necessary to avoid turmoil in the country.

Tinubu urged political actors to operate within established guidelines when contesting political offices and emphasized the importance of peace, stability, and tolerance in Nigeria's political landscape. He highlighted the sacrifices made for democracy, referencing his own experiences of persecution and exile during military rule.

Tinubu stressed that democracy thrives on diverse opinions and peaceful competition among political parties. He called for mutual respect and dialogue among party leaders and noted that the overwhelming passage of the Electoral Act by the National Assembly left him no choice but to sign it.

He reminded political leaders that acceptance of electoral outcomes is crucial for democratic legitimacy, urging them to engage in good faith during elections.
