Islamic Cleric Testifies in Coup Plot Trial Against Tinubu

Sheikh Abdulkadir Sani appeared in a Federal High Court in Abuja, where he is on trial for allegedly plotting to topple President Bola Tinubu. In a video presented to the court, Sani claimed he had warned the conspirators that their coup would fail.

He stated that he provided spiritual guidance to the group and predicted their actions would be undermined by internal betrayal. Sani identified Col. Maaji as the alleged ringleader and mentioned that he received funds strictly for prayer and charity, not for participating in treason.

The court, presided over by Justice Joyc Abdulmalik, ordered a joint trial for Sani and five co-defendants, who face 13 counts including treason and terrorism. The defendants' legal team argued that their statements were obtained under coercion, violating the Anti-Torture Act.

The matter has been adjourned until May 12 for further proceedings.
