ICPC Convicts NSCDC Deputy Commandant for Employment Fraud

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has secured the conviction of Sani Lawal, a Deputy Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), for employment fraud. This conviction was the result of a plea bargain agreement between the prosecution and the defense, affirmed by Justice A.A.

Bawale of Katsina State High Court No. 3. The court found Lawal guilty and sentenced him to pay a fine of ₦100,000.

During the proceedings, ICPC Counsel Haruna Hedima revealed that Lawal had corruptly obtained ₦920,000 from two complainants under the false pretense of securing employment for them in the NSCDC. Although initially charged with eight counts of employment fraud, the conviction was entered on two counts as per the plea bargain agreement.

The offences are contrary to Section 25(1)(a) and punishable under Section 25(1)(b) of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000. The ICPC reiterated its commitment to combating corruption and warned the public against fraudulent recruitment schemes.
