Idris Defends Fuel Subsidy Removal, Warns Against Return to Old Policy

Mohammed Idris, Nigeria's Minister of Information and National Orientation, has pushed back against demands to reinstate petrol subsidies, declaring in a published opinion piece that doing so would undermine the country's recent economic progress. Idris argued that subsidy removal, implemented under President Bola Tinubu's administration since May 2023, has generated substantial fiscal benefits that support government funding priorities.

The minister contended that returning to the subsidy model would recreate the financial pressures and structural weaknesses that made the previous system unsustainable. He specifically warned that such a reversal could erode investor confidence and compromise Nigeria's improved fiscal standing.

According to the government's position, subsidy removal has liberated approximately N15.8 trillion in resources that are now available for alternative government expenditures. Idris framed the subsidy debate as a choice between competing priorities, suggesting that resources previously consumed by subsidies could instead fund student loan programmes and other essential services.
