IFAB Admits Breel Embolo's Red Card Was Incorrect

The International Football Association Board (IFAB) has conceded that Switzerland striker Breel Embolo should not have been red-carded during the FIFA World Cup quarter-final against Argentina. Referee Wolfgang Stark issued a second yellow card to Embolo in the 72nd minute after a VAR review determined he simulated a foul on Argentina's Leandro Paredes.

This decision was pivotal as Switzerland had just equalized at 1-1 before conceding two more goals, resulting in a 3-1 defeat in extra time. The Swiss media criticized the card as an incorrect judgment that "ruined" the match, with complaints also emerging from other teams, including Egyptian officials.

In a statement, IFAB indicated that the mistaken identity protocol applied in this case was inappropriate according to current laws. Switzerland's coach, Murat Yakin, expressed his discontent at the post-match conference, stating that the incorrect application of laws destroyed the match.

IFAB acknowledged the need for law amendments regarding VAR usage in such scenarios.
