IGP Directs Police to Focus on Terrorism Financing Cases

On Tuesday, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, announced a directive for police officers across Nigeria to channel cases involving terrorism financing, banditry, and other financial crimes to specialized units. This initiative is part of efforts to strengthen intelligence-led policing and combat criminal activities, particularly as crime increasingly relies on illicit financial transactions.

Disu emphasized the need for closer collaboration between the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) to effectively tackle issues such as terrorism, banditry, and crude oil theft. He stated that following the financial trails of these crimes could potentially reduce their occurrence by up to 50 percent.

The Force has established a dedicated Proceeds of Crime Section, led by a Deputy Commissioner of Police with expertise in financial crime, to enhance investigations. Disu also requested more training opportunities from the NFIU for police personnel in financial intelligence and asset tracing.
