George Ilenikhena Commits to Nigeria National Team

Striker George Ilenikhena has reportedly committed his international future to Nigeria after discussions with Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle. The 19-year-old, who has been monitored by Chelle for nearly a year, agreed to represent Nigeria after being omitted from the Super Eagles squad during the March international window while he considered playing for France.

Ilenikhena, who was born in Lagos and moved to France as a child, is eligible to play for both countries but has never participated in official matches for France. Therefore, he will not need a one-time nationality switch to play for Nigeria.

He began his professional career with Belgian club Royal Antwerp before moving to AS Monaco and then to Saudi Pro League champions Al-Ittihad earlier this year. His decision is significant for Chelle, who is preparing the U-23 team for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games and strengthening options for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Earlier in 2023, while at Monaco, Ilenikhena became the youngest African player to reach 15 UEFA Champions League appearances.
