Ronaldo Will Depart Portugal Team If Unwanted

Cristiano Ronaldo, the captain of the Portugal national team, declared that his future with the team hinges on whether he is still wanted. At a press conference ahead of Portugal's UEFA Nations League opener against Wales, Ronaldo stated, “If Portugal no longer want to rely on me, I can leave from today.” He expressed that he would proactively discuss his departure with the Portuguese Football Federation if necessary.

Despite contemplating retirement after Portugal's exit in the round-of-16 at the 2026 World Cup, conversations with Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença and new head coach Jorge Jesus convinced him to continue. Ronaldo, who has scored 146 goals in 233 appearances for Portugal, remains motivated by the support of the Portuguese people and aims to reach 1,000 career goals.

He also expressed his commitment to helping Portugal win another Nations League title under coach Jorge Jesus, who confirmed Ronaldo would start the match against Wales.
