Abuja Flooding Linked to Illegal Structures and Climate Change

Nyesom Wike, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, addressed the worsening flooding in Abuja, attributing it to illegal structures and climate change during a media parley in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. He highlighted that the construction of buildings along natural waterways has obstructed rainwater flow, contributing to flooding in the capital.

Wike pointed out that some developers have encroached on floodplains and natural drainage channels, which adversely affects the city's drainage system during heavy rainfall. He disclosed that the FCT Administration has suspended a director from the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) due to alleged involvement in approving buildings constructed on waterways.

Wike stated that the administration is reviewing developments across the FCT to identify structures obstructing natural waterways and will continue to enforce the Abuja Master Plan. He stressed the importance of adhering to approved planning regulations to protect lives and property in the territory.
