Peter Obi Addresses Atiku Abubakar Speculations for 2027

Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra State and a presidential hopeful for the 2027 elections, spoke on Friday during a dialogue in Cape Town, South Africa. He dismissed claims that he is avoiding former Vice President Atiku Abubakar ahead of the presidential elections.

Obi stated that he respects Atiku, referring to him as an elder brother, and emphasized the importance of unity among politicians to build a strong opposition front. This statement comes in the wake of the collapse of their coalition earlier in the year, which had included Atiku and other political figures.

Obi had previously joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on January 1, 2026, and Atiku welcomed this coalition at the time, viewing it as a significant step towards strengthening opposition politics in Nigeria. However, internal disputes and legal battles led to the coalition's breakdown, prompting Obi to clarify his position regarding Atiku and the need for a focused opposition movement.
