Imo NBA Introduces Measures Against Legal Quackery

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Imo State Chapter, is taking significant steps to address quackery in legal services. During a press conference in Owerri on Thursday, Chairman Prof.

Nnamdi Obiareri highlighted the importance of protecting the integrity of the legal profession, as outlined in the Legal Practitioners Act Cap L11 LFN (Amendment 2023). The NBA has introduced a new remuneration structure for legal services, which will be enforced starting May 2023.

This structure mandates that lawyers adhere to a specified fee schedule based on property valuation, with fees set at 10% for properties valued below 50 million Naira, 7.5% for properties between 50 million and 100 million Naira, and 5% for amounts above 100 million Naira. Lawyers must comply with this fee schedule and submit documentation for review upon payment.

Failure to comply may result in suspension or disbarment. The initiative aims to curb unprofessional practices and ensure that clients receive quality legal services while maintaining access for those in need.
