NBA Declares Legal Remuneration Order Mandatory Nationwide

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has asserted that the remuneration order for legal practitioners is not optional and is binding across the country. This declaration followed a resolution adopted during the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on February 5, 2026, in Maiduguri, Borno State.

The statement, issued via the NBA's official account, reaffirmed the association's commitment to enforcing a fair structure for legal fees nationwide. Chief Emeka Obegolu SAN, chair of the remuneration committee, outlined strategies for nationwide advocacy and enforcement actions, including a disciplinary review set to begin at the start of the 2026 legal year.

The NEC commended the committee for its sustained engagement aimed at institutionalizing a culture of fair remuneration within the profession. The council also noted the need for clear written terms of engagement between lawyers and clients to prevent disputes.

The NBA insists that the remuneration order is crucial for protecting the dignity and economic sustainability of legal practice in Nigeria.
