Imo Police Launch New Violent Crime Response Unit

The Imo State Police Command has inaugurated a new Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) to replace several defunct tactical squads, including the notorious Tiger Base, as part of a major overhaul of its operations. This initiative aligns with reforms directed by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Olatunji Disu and aims to enhance the professionalism and accountability of the police force.

The VCRU is specifically mandated to combat high-level threats such as armed robbery, kidnapping, terrorism, cultism, and unlawful possession of firearms. CP Audu Garba Bosso stated that personnel for the unit were handpicked based on their integrity and competence, and they have undergone special training in intelligence-led policing and crisis management, adhering to strict human rights compliance.

A civilian oversight board, which includes representatives from the Nigerian Bar Association, Nigeria Union of Journalists, and the National Human Rights Commission, has been established to ensure public feedback and accountability. The launch event was attended by various stakeholders, including Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma.
