India Completes Final Breakthrough in Zojila Tunnel

On June 9, 2026, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari announced the successful completion of the final rock breakthrough phase of the Zojila Tunnel project, a critical infrastructure initiative aimed at improving connectivity to Ladakh. The tunnel, spanning approximately 13.15 kilometers and situated at an altitude of roughly 11,578 feet above sea level, will link Baltal near Sonamarg in Jammu and Kashmir to Meenamarg in Ladakh.

This dual-purpose tunnel is designed to facilitate both civilian travel and military logistics, addressing the region's isolation due to heavy snowfall and avalanches that block the Zojila Pass for six months each year. The project is expected to be fully completed by February 2028 and is part of a broader push to modernize infrastructure across India, particularly in the strategically significant Kashmir and Ladakh regions amid heightened tensions.

The Zojila Tunnel will ensure reliable year-round access to Ladakh, enhancing both trade and defense capabilities.
