Activists Demand Release of Detained Protesters in India

The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), a youth-led movement in India, is demanding the release of all detained protesters following nationwide demonstrations that resulted in the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The protests were sparked by exam paper leaks and irregularities, with reports of students detained particularly in Assam, West Bengal, and Bihar.

CJP spokesperson Ashutosh Ranka stated that if the government does not release the detained individuals, they will resume protests. The movement, which has gained millions of followers since its inception in May by Abhijeet Dipke, has seen at least 100 arrests, many on non-bailable charges.

Demonstrations turned violent on July 20, leading to police using tear gas and batons to disperse crowds. A police official in Bihar was suspended for using an assault rifle against student protesters.

The Chief Justice of India has called for an independent investigation into allegations of police brutality, emphasizing the constitutional right to peaceful protest.
