India Urges Meta to Delay WhatsApp Username Feature

The Indian government has formally requested Meta to postpone the launch of a new WhatsApp username feature, citing concerns about potential increases in online fraud and impersonation. This request comes as India grapples with a surge in cybercrime, with scammers exploiting low digital safety awareness among its approximately half a billion WhatsApp users.

The feature, which would allow users to connect via unique usernames instead of phone numbers, is designed to enhance privacy. However, officials fear it could make it easier for fraudsters to target victims.

A letter from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology emphasized the need for consultation before proceeding with the rollout. Meta has appointed Kunal Shah as the new head of WhatsApp in India, although the feature has not yet gone live in the country.

Current measures include reserving usernames for public figures with verified accounts to protect against impersonation. Recent government figures indicate that India lost nearly $3 billion to cyber fraud in 2025, a significant increase from 2021.
